Welcome to NEGSS

NEGSS (New Era Girls Secondary School) International Alumnae Association was founded by a group of old girls from various class sets (1973-1978, 1975-1980, 1976-1981, & 1977-1982) in Atlanta, GA in the summer of 2010.

The founding collaborators were Fola Bisi Orekoya née Agbe, Ngozi Oloruntoba née Nwagbara, Late Bola Nicholson née Ramos, Yemi Akande née Falemi, Pero Soyebo née Osilaja, Bunmi Ogunmola née Palmer, Folasade Adekoya née Shitta-Bey, Laura Jackson née Maduakoh, Mobola Majekodunmi née Williams, Morinola Oyewole née Sodeke, Nike Thorpe née Alabi, Yemisi Winfunke, Late Sumbo Ajose, Iyabo Olanrewaju née Adebanjo, Iyabo Asani née Onipede .

From the initial reunion gathering in 2010, we nominated and voted the following attendees as officers of NEGSS International Alumni Association, Fola Orekoya-president, Pero Soyebo-vice president, Morin Sodeke-general secretary, Iyabo Olarenwaju-treasurer. Advisors were Ngozi Oloruntoba and late Abimbola Nicholson. The current association’s name was revised on July 16, 2013 to NEGSS International Alumnae Association.

The purpose of NEGSS International Alumnae Association:

NEGSS International Alumnae Association’s main goal is to help our alma mater and its current students be “the best in the world” which is modeled after the school motto “The Utmost for The Best ” and also to create a family of sisterhood.

Ngozi Oloruntoba née Nwagbara

President

Ngozi Oloruntoba is a middle school teacher with the NY public School System. Her objective in life is to impact knowledge to all the kids she teaches. Ngozi attended New Era girls’ secondary school and graduated in 1978. She went on to attend Lagos State Polytechnic and graduated after four years with a Business Administration degree. She migrated to the United States of America (New York City) after which she attended York college, got her bachelors degree and proceeded to Touro college for her Masters degree. She obtained a certificate to teach General Education students and became a Special Education Teacher.

While working as a special education teacher, Ngozi also taught and mentored other teachers on how to develop individual education plans for special education students. She also attended College of Saint Rose where she obtained Educational Leadership certificate. Presently, Ngozi works for the New York City Department of Education as a Special Education Teacher. She is married with four children.

Dr. Folasade “Sade” Adekoya (Nee Shitta-Bey)

Dr. Folasade “Sade” Adekoya (Nee Shitta-Bey) was born in 1966 in Aldershot, also known
as Aldershot Military Town, a major garrison in Southeast England, United Kingdom. She
started her Elementary and Primary education at Princess May Primary School, a two-form entry
primary school in a vibrant area of Hackney, situated between Stoke Newington and Dalston, in
North-East London. Following her parents’ relocation to Nigeria in 1974, she continued her
preparatory education at Fountain School in Surulere, Lagos, where she completed her primary
education.
Sade attended New Era Girls Secondary School (“NEGSS”) between 1976 and 1981.
Upon graduating with her O-Level certificate from NEGSS, Sade returned to the United
Kingdom and attended St Mary’s Gate School for Girls (SMG), located at the seaside town of
Bournemouth in Southern England, where she earned her A-Level certificate in 1984. She
obtained her first degree, a BSc (Hons) in Polymer Engineering, from the University of North
London in 1991.
Sade got married in 1991 and relocated to Chicago, Illinois, to be with her sweetheart,
Ade. Together, they have four amazing adult children. Sade fell in love with Nursing as a career
after giving birth to her fourth child. A few years later, she received her Registered Nurse (RN)
and then proceeded to earn her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from St. Xavier’s
University (Chicago, Illinois) and her Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Governors
State University (University Park, Illinois).
She is currently employed as a nursing professional development practitioner at a major
and one of the largest hospital systems and healthcare providers in the Midwest, United States. In
her role as a specialist in clinical nursing development, she is responsible for the continuous
growth and professional development of nurses and other team members. Through her
commitment to evidence-based practice, she impacts positive patient outcomes daily.
She is an ardent change agent who consistently partners with team members for practice
transitions, champions best-in-class patient care, and regularly incorporates empirical research
into real-time practice.
In addition to her primary responsibilities, she serves as the chairperson of shared
governance—a model of nursing practice designed to integrate core values and beliefs that
professional practice embraces as a means of achieving quality care. Further, she serves as the
unit representative on the hospital’s Practice Council—a formal mechanism for nursing staff to
address practice, leadership, and research issues. Furthermore, she collaborates with colleagues
and serves as a leader and partner on the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team.
Sade is truly passionate about lifelong learning; she loves imparting her knowledge to
others while learning along the way. She was an adjunct clinical professor of Nursing from 2010
to 2017 at a local community college. She enjoys taking on new challenges and recently gained
a Reiki Level I certification. Her hobbies include basketball, gardening, Yoga, Mindfulness
practice, listening and dancing to music (like no one is watching)😊

Yemisi Winfunke

Born and raised in Lagos Nigeria, have been residing in the United States since September 1987.  Psychiatric and Family Nurse Practitioner, resides in Gilbert, Arizona.

Nike Alabi-Thorpe

Nike Alabi -Thorpe attended New Era Girls Secondary School from 1977 to 1982.
She attended St Teresa Girls College in Ibadan for her A – levels from 1983 to 1985 before proceeding to
University of Lagos to obtain her Bachelor of Arts Degree in English, graduating in 1989. Nike did her
youth service program and after that worked at formerly named Nigeria Arab Bank at Broad Street
Lagos.
Nike migrated in 1995 to the US to continue her education. She obtained a Certificate in Paralegal
studies, intending to apply to a law college ultimately. Instead, she proceeded to get a degree
in Business law and then Masters in Project Management. Her work experience has largely been with oil
and gas companies. Nike is a divorcee with two adult children and currently lives in Richmond, Texas.
With a background in Project management and board /corporate subsidiary management, Nike
currently works at a Houston Oil and Gas Corporation as a Snr. Corporate Governance Manager and is
eagerly waiting for retirement.
She has been an active member of the NEGSSS International Alumnae Association since its inception. She was the
acting Secretary from 2019 – 2022 and currently serve as Assistant Secretary of the Association and has
been on multiple Committees of the Association.
In addition to spending time with her family, Nike loves traveling, music, reading, exploring, and learning
about other cultures.
